Tired of going into Manhattan for an all-natural spa day? That’s what inspired LaShunda Davis to open ‘Cure Beauty Bar on Fulton Street. The name ‘Cure is short for manicure or pedicure, but is also indicative of all the services offered. Healthy nails, skin and spirit are all on the menu!

We caught up with her recently and learned about the history of – and many services and packages available at - ‘Cure, and the return of natural beauty to Fulton Street.

FAB: How long has your business been on Fulton Street?

LaShunda Davis: ‘Cure Beauty Bar has been here for about two and a half years. We opened in August of 2007.

FAB: What made you select Fulton Street for your business?

LaShunda Davis:
I live in the neighborhood and I was looking for an area that had great foot traffic, is close to the subway and near both businesses and residential areas. I chose Fulton Street area because of that, but also because the area was lacking the kind of services I provide. I was personally tired of running into Manhattan for manicures/pedicures, and there were so many neighborhoods converging here that would utilize this type of service. My research showed the market was there for this business, and since Clinton Hill, Ft. Greene and Prospect Heights all converge on Fulton Street, it was perfect.

FAB:  What do you love about the area?

LaShunda Davis:  Hands down, it’s the neighbors. I love the people in this neighborhood – the diversity of people, such as artists, students, business people, new moms, and so forth. I’ve met some amazing people in this community who are now friends as well as clients. It makes the difficult days easier to see old friends, or make new ones.

FAB:
What would you recommend to other businesses on Fulton Street to help them succeed?

LaShunda Davis: I would recommend that they get involved with community efforts. For instance, we’re participating in FAB Fridays to draw people to Fulton Street. By increasing my clientele, I’m also helping surrounding businesses by increasing foot traffic, and the same goes for each of us. Additionally, it lets the residents of the local neighborhoods know how much we appreciate their business – it’s a great way to say ‘thank you’ to our neighbors! It’s also a way to get to know our customers on a first-name basis and give back to our community.

FAB: How did you get started in your business?

LaShunda Davis: I come from a fashion background and had been laid off from my job. I decided that I wanted to take the control of my career into my own hands. After much thought about where I would like to spend 8 to 10 hours a day, I decided to venture out on my own and open ‘Cure. I went to school to educate myself on the details of nail care and spa treatments. Then, partnering with my sister Tina Davis, I wrote a business plan and found this space.

FAB: What would you like the community to know about Cure Beauty Bar?

LaShunda Davis:
I would like for them to know we provide quality manicures and pedicures. We use all- natural products so that our clients aren’t overwhelmed with the “chemical” smells of some nail salons. When you step into ‘Cure, you smell scented candles, not adhesives or other chemicals. We are also amazing with nail art and nail care. However, we also strive to educate our customers about nail health which is as important as the aesthetics. We also offer facials, massage and a whole array of spa services, specialty candles, Pangea Organics products, Kissable Couture lip gloss, Hair Rules and fabulous jewelry by Brooklyn designers. We’re a hidden oasis - right in the neighborhood – where everyone is welcome.
