Bike Racks, Bikes, Earth Day and Habana Outpost Re-Opens!
Monday, April 11, 2011
As Earth Day events and initiatives are celebrated, here are a few from the FAB Alliance and some businesses on Fulton Street in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill.
TREE GIVEAWAY SUCCESS - AGAIN!
300 free trees given away on March 26, 2011 for people to plant in their front or back yards, at their apartment complex, church or school. The first person lined up two hours early and the Dog Woods and Cherry Trees were gone in :90 minutes! All part of the million trees NYC initiative, in partnership with "Green Fort Greene & Clinton Hill". (See some photos). The FAB Alliance is proud to have hosted this event at the PUTNAM TRIANGLE in Clinton Hill for the second year in a row - that makes 500 free trees distributed to the community. Special thanks to the students from Benjamin Banneker High School who unloaded the 18-wheeler and set up the nursery.
HABANA OUTPOST RE-OPENS
2011 Habana Works Earth Day Expo at Habana Outpost – New York’s first solar powered restaurant! Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 16th to celebrate the re-opening of the restaurant and a day of eco-friendly fun – Habana style.
Habana Works is the non-profit branch of the Habana family, which provides free, hands-on programs that celebrate urban environmentalism in the Brooklyn community. The Earth Day Expo is an opportunity for our neighbors to join us in spreading the love by participating in the Earth day program while sharing resources and ideas about sustainable living!
Event highlights include: The Kid’s Corner, The ABCs of Bees and Beekeeping, NYC Compost Project Workshops, Urban Acres – Learn organic gardening tips and tricks and more.
MORE BIKE RACKS COMING TO FULTON
Responding to FAB's request to install bike racks in Clinton Hill, the NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) installed 59 bike racks over one weekend on the blocks of Fulton between Waverly and Classon. And now, the DOT is completing FAB's request by installing 19 new bike racks on two blocks of Fulton between Waverly and Vanderbilt. Expect to start using them in the next few days.
CELEBRATING TWO LAPS AROUND THE CALENDAR
On Sunday, April 17, 2011 Bespoke Bicycles at 64 Lafayette Avenue (S. Elliott Place) will celebrate its second year with a store-wide sale and... cupcakes!
MORE TREES IN THE STREET
Preparations are underway for the planting of dozens of new street trees just off Fulton. New tree pits have been cut into the sidewalks of Clermont, Clinton and Vanderbilt Avenues. Sidewalks have been cut, dirt dug up and mulch is on the way.
BUSINESSES GETTING MORE GREEN?
FAB will be partnering with Green Fort Greene & Clinton Hill to expand their initiative to help businesses—and their customers—go more green. More details to come.
